Uncasville, CT (November 2006) Mia McSherry, Regional General Manager of Michael Jordans Steak House and 23.sportcafe both located in Mohegan Sun Casino and Resort in Uncasville, CT, has been named the Edward O. McCabe Employer of the Year award by the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce, Mystic, CT. The award was inspired by the efforts of Edward O. McCabe, who aided more than 100 fellow employees of Mystic Color Lab to find new jobs after the company was shuttered in 2002. The Greater Chamber of Commerce, an 800+ member organization that fosters and promotes business for its members, will present this annual award to McSherry at a dinner ceremony held on Friday, December 1 at the Mystic Marriott Hotel and Spa.
McSherry oversees a team of more than 200 employees from dishwashers to line and prep cooks to bussers, servers, bartenders, hosts and hostesses, and managers. Her positive and motivational leadership has made a strong impact on her team, who believe that her managerial approach has empowered them to become more confident workers while her constant encouragement helps them to pursue their goals and grow personally and professionally.
Mia is a successful, upbeat, motivated person who breathes these characteristics into her team on a daily basis. She always empowers me to make decisions and has complete confidence in my ability, said Denise Vallillo, sales and marketing manager of Michael Jordans Steak House and 23.sportcafe, who has worked alongside McSherry for four years and nominated her for the award. As always, her major focus is on the guests experience. Cultivating meaningful relationships with our customers is definitely a value she has instilled in all of us.
The complexity of overseeing two restaurants open 365 days a year, serving close to 6,000 customers per week has not stopped McSherry from donating her own services or encouraging others to volunteer. Together with staff, McSherry contributes to a Moveable Feast, providing home-delivered hot meals to AIDS/HIV+ people and their families in New London County. She also donates her time to Restaurants for Relief, and other notable local organizations.
